Painting Brake Hubs

After all the work from rebuilding an repainting all four of the calipers and replaceing the discs, the rust on the brakes hubs looked terrible.
This is right front brake after I removed the wheel. This is after I sanded and used Fantastic on the hubs and after the third coat of 1200o heat treated paint.

 

It is very common for cars brake hubs to rust, not only in Porsches, but American cars as well. Common though it is, it is very ugly. The rust is not dangerous, just ugly.

 

A better picture of the rusty hubs. It is just the center of the brakes that rust, so the rest has to be protected from the paint spray.

 

This is masking off the calipers, the wires, brake lines and rotors. I also covered the inside of the wheel wells and around the fender.I cut out paper templates to cover the rotors.

 

The templates would not rotate under the calipers. So I had to paint about 80 percent of each hub, applying three coats and then rotate the templates for last small part that was under the caliper.

This is after all of the masking has been removed. There were a few small areas of overspray on the rotors that I removed with rubbing alcohol. I let it sit for 24 hours and then put the wheels back on.

 

These are the lug nuts after painting: why go to all this trouble and not take ten more minutes to paint the lugs.

 

This is the right front after the tires were mounted back on the car.

 

This is the left rear after the tires were mounted back on the car. The rears wheels were a little more trouble than the front weels just because of the axels. For the rears wheels, I had to paint eighty percent of the hubs, but then I couldn’t rotate the discs. I had to remove all of the masking, mount the wheel, lower the car, move the car back about ten inches, raise and remove the wheel, the remask everything and apply the paint. I could only do this one side at a time, so I had to repeat the process for the other side.
